In our next creative open mic, we explore how artists transfer their skills when they transition from digital to analogue, analogue to digital or code switching.

At our first Creative Open Mic session on Tuesday 12 April we welcome Coral Noel Yang to chat to us about transferring her skills from the digital world of visual design and storytelling as a filmmaker director to physical, analogue world of painting on canvas. And our second guest speaker is the super talented Renee Thyne. Renee is an artist of many mediums, ranging from Acrylic painting, photography and digital creations, to stunning tattoo work. She has been learning tattoo since Jan 2021 and loving every minute of it … and very talented at what she does.

Coral was trained as a professional film maker, directing and producing films, TV commercials and children’s television, as well as creative director for a multi-national animation studio. In between her film projects she discovered her love of painting – her “happy place” – where she produces abstract as well as realistic work.

Renee is a self-taught artist of many mediums I completed a bachelors degree of Graphic Design in 2009. Majoring in illustration I completed several children’s books for Duck Creek Press and there after did a range of acrylic painted commissions. In pursuit of other passions during my 20’s I found myself joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force and have been there ever since. Although my primary role is not typically creative, I have continued to use my creative skills by completing a range of projects over the years, including murals for the RNZAF.

Most recently under the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic and lock-downs I relished in immersing myself in drawing again. Circumstances at that time did not allow me the freedom to use my traditional materials so I invested in an iPad and the Procreate program. Through experimentation and social media, my creative path has made a significant shift towards digital media. I’m now using this skill in conjunction with tattoo to develop and apply custom designs for my clients.
