Fine Art Giclée Printing

The term “giclée” is derived from the French for “spray” and was first coined by Jack Duganne, a printmaker, to represent an inkjet-based digital print used as fine art.  Giclée Printing refers to a printmaking method that involves using a digitised image outputted from a computer to a large format inkjet printer.  To qualify for the title of a “fine art giclée print” it should be made on archival quality coated paper, and printed with pigment based archival inks, which are UV stable.

Print Art offers a variety of fine art and photographic quality inkjet giclée paper that we have in stock, however should you require a different quality paper, that can be sourced with little difficulty, we are happy to oblige. Please discuss your choice with us so that we can give you the best we have on offer for the job that needs doing. Pre-production is important, so we offer a tried and tested soft proofing process that has produced stunning results using the Epson and Canon inkjet printers.

Gallery Quality Prints

Our Fine Art print studio makes use of large format wide colour gamut printers, both designed for the high-end digital photographic and print reproduction work. These printers are capable of producing detail rich prints on some of the finest ink jet papers available.

Our giclée printers uses a combination of 12 different ink colours to reproduce millions of colours, some of which were almost impossible to achieve by older 4 colour CMYK printers. That means we can print almost as many colours as your top end digital cameras are able to capture.

A giclee print made using pigment inks can be lightfast for up to 100+ years, but this depends on factors such as paper type and storage conditions. By using pigment based archival inks, the archival properties of a giclee print are significantly higher than traditional silkscreen or litho prints.

Print Quality

When you decide to reproduce your original art work, there are two issues to think about.  Scan quality and choosing the right paper/canvas.  The scan quality is probably the most important factor in the process, and we at Print Art make sure that we get it right!

If you already have a digital file of your artwork, but are unsure if the file is suitable for printing to a certain size, contact us to discuss this.  Making a proof print is a great way to check if your file is suitable – you will get to see first hand how it will look.
