From an early education in Graphic Design and illustration, I pursued an extensive career in the arts and education in both Australia and New Zealand spanning over 4 decades.
After moving to Perth Western Australia in the early 90s I began an academic career studying and lecturing in the Arts across the University of Western Australia and Curtin University. During this period, I produced a large body of work both private and commercial.

On my return to New Zealand, I relinquished lecturing commitments to focus exclusively on my own art production.Discussion Topic: Rising from the ashes … a conversation on the magic and relevance of our oldest technologies in contemporary art production.

The invitation to present at the forthcoming Print Arts Creative Open Mic on 19th August provides an excellent forum to explore the merits and relevance of low tech/no tech alternatives as a counter to our current obsession with AI and the implication of technology on the future of artistic creation.

My background in lecturing across various artistic disciplines has enabled me to identify common causes to the vulnerabilities we experience as creative individuals. I ascertain much creative anxiety stems from an increasing dependency on visual technologies and the pressure to remain current in the face of the rapid developments in this area.

In response, a significant part of my artistic teaching career has been directed to healing the creative spirit that lies at the core of our ability to make and think. I believe the act of drawing lies at the foundation of reclaiming confidence in our artistic abilities.

This discussion around the contemporary relevance of low-tech- no-tech principles is not to set up a dichotomy between new visual technology verses traditional, rather it is to help provide a secure and confident base from which to embrace and harness the new challenges and opportunities offered by the AI revolution.

Part of this discussion will explore our current obsession with authenticity and how this relates to the era of post-truth we presently inhabit.
